The warmer weather is moving in. This means it is time to get outdoors and enjoy all that spring has to offer. It also means you need to get your sprinkler system in gear for the upcoming plant growing season. It is never a good idea to just turn the system on after it has been dormant all winter. Instead, make sure to check out the five things listed here.

The Water Lines

Look for any breaks in the water lines. Some signs that indicate a problem include water bubbling under shrubs, bark or grass or puddles near the sprinkler lines. If these issues are seen, then this is a definite sign of a problem that needs to be repaired.

The Sprinkler Heads

Make sure to inspect each of the sprinkler heads to ensure there aren’t any breaks or heads that are buried in the dirt or grass. A sign of this may be water shooting straight into the air like a geyser. Other signs of an issue with the sprinkler heads is if the spray is erratic, or there is no water coming out of it at all. Make sure to adjust the spray heads, so they are watering your yard, shrubs, and plants, rather than hard surfaces, such as your house, driveway or walkway.

The Nozzles

Over time, nozzles can become plugged. There may even be some that are broken. Take the time to inspect each one to make sure no issues are present.

The Valves

The valves play a critical role in the proper functioning of your sprinkler system. Before turning the water on, look for any leaks or breaks. In some cases, bugs and other critters can get inside and make a huge mess with the wires, and gophers like to make mounds of dirt that cover the valves. Be sure to clean out the valve boxes and ensure they are working properly. If there is an excessive amount of water in the box, make sure to check the pipe and valves coming into the box for signs of a break.

The Controller

Make sure the controller is still programmed from the previous season. It may also be necessary to change the batteries. Be sure to set up a watering schedule that meets the specific needs of the grass and plants in your yard.
